When making a Christmas cookie box, having a variety of colors, textures and flavors is the key to a beautiful and delicious holiday treat.
For this cookie box I decided to combine Christmas classics like gingerbread cut outs, sugar cookies and candy chocolate chip cookies with some childhood favorites like guava jam thumbprints, barquillos (Pirouettes) and alfajores.
How to build a cookie box
These cookie boxes can be quite intimidating to make but with a bit of planning, you can bring them to life with little effort.
You can make the dough for the gingerbread, sugar cookies and candy cookies in advance and bake when ready to assemble the box.
Gingerbread cutouts
For this easy gingerbread cutouts I used some leftover dough from the soft glazed gingerbread recipe from Tartine.
Sugar Cookies
For the sugar cookies and gingerbread you will need a bit of time to decorate them with icing and let it set. I used this easy, no-corn-syrup icing recipe.
Candy cookies
These candy cookies are great to use any leftover candy from holidays.
I used the same recipe that I made during halloween to use leftover candy. It is easy to make and delicious.
Jam Thumbprints
The easiest cookies to make in this box were the jam thumbprints, they took 30 minutes from start to finish and no chilling is required.
Alfajores
Alfajores are also easy to make although the dough requires a bit of manual work since you have knead it for about 10 minutes.
Barquillos
The barquillos were the trickiest cookie in this box. The batter needs to be right before baking them and you need to roll them when they are still quite warm in order to get a nice shape.
I hope you give some of these cookies a try for your next cookie box.
