This Viral Caramelized Onion Dip is creamy, cheesy and full of sweet onion flavor. Perfect for a holiday party or a game day snack.
Recipe ingredients
For this TikTok viral caramelized onion dip you need a handful of ingredients and a bit of patience. Caramelized onions take time but the end result is so worth it.
- Yellow onions: These have a sweeter taste and when caramelized they have a mild flavor.
- Garlic: Adds great aroma and goes hand in hand with the onions.
- Cream cheese: is the base of this dip and gives it the creamy texture. Make sure your cream cheese is softened.
- Sour cream: Helps balance the cheeses and gives the dip a subtle tangy flavor.
- Bacon: Adds crispy texture and a delicious smokey flavor. Cooking the onions in the rendered bacon fat adds a delicious flavor to the dip.
- Shredded cheese: in this recipe use yellow sharp cheddar and mozzarella or some melty cheeses you like. A smoked gouda and gruyere would be great too.
Make the recipe
Peel the onions, cut them in half lengthwise and slice them lengthwise into ⅛ thick pieces. Mince the garlic and set aside.
Start by dicing the bacon the cooking it in a skillet until crispy. Remove from the skillet and reserve the bacon fat.
Add the sliced onions in the skillet with the bacon fat. Add another tablespoon of avocado oil if needed.
Caramelizing onions take time and you will need to keep a watchful eye and stir them constantly, making sure there to be scraping the skillet and adding little bits of liquid as needed.
As the onions caramelize, start grating the cheeses. You will need about ¾ of the cheese to mix with the cream cheese and the rest to put on top.
When the onions are done, add them to the cream cheese, add the sour cream, cheese and bacon until you form an even paste.
Layer it on a baking dish and top it with cheese. Bake covered for 20 minutes and uncovered for 10 until the cheese is golden brown.
How to serve this dip
When I took this dip to a Thanksgiving party, I brought some delicious, baked rosemary crackers. The lighter texture of the crackers went really well with the richness of this dip.
I added some chives to serve it and skipped the crispy onions and bacon on top as the original recipe from Here is Your Bite suggests.
Leftovers storage
Leftovers will keep well for up to 1 week stored in an airtight container in the fridge.
To reheat, cover with aluminum foil and bake at 350°F for about 15 minutes and uncovered for 10.
