    Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Fire up your smoker and make this easy smoked bbq pulled pork shoulder; it's juicy, tender and feeds a crowd.

Why this is the best pulled pork recipe

If you have a smoker you know that it elevates the flavor of the meat you cook in it.

This recipe yields a tender, flavorful and juicy pulled pork that you can use in many ways.

To make this recipe you only need minimal ingredients and prep to make this recipe a success.

    Smoked pork ingredients

The first thing you need to determine is the kind of wood pellets you will use. For this recipe I really like the.

    • Pork shoulder or pork butt: This is an affordable cut of meat with a good amount of fat that will make the final result juicy and flavorful.
    • Yellow mustard: I use regular liquid yellow mustard to coat the pork and make the dry rub stick easily.
    • BBQ rub: Use your favorite meat rub. Look for one that has a bit of sugar, paprika and garlic. I like this Honey Hogg rub.
    • BBQ sauce: Our favorite store-bought BBQ sauce or homemade works for this recipe.
    • Brown sugar: This ingredient will help caramelize the meat and create a nice crust.
    • Butter: This in combination with the brown sugar will help create the crust on the outside of the pork.
    • Apple juice: Used for spritzing the pork every hour to keep it moist.

    Instructions

Start by prepping the pork shoulder by removing the excess fat. Use a sharp knife and carefully remove some of the excess fat but not all.

Pat the meat dry with a paper towel and add some mustard. Spread it evenly on all sides of the pork shoulder to create a nice coating.

Place the pork shoulder directly on the smoker grill grates.

Smoke at 275F for 8 hours or until internal temperature reaches 190F. I always cook with a bluetooth meat thermometer. The rule of thumb is about 1 hour per pound.

You will need to spritz the pork every hour with apple juice to keep it moist.

When the pork reaches 165F, remove from the smoker and place on a foil pan. Add the butter and coat with brown sugar. Cover tightly with aluminum foil and return to the smoker.

What to serve with smoked pork

There is plenty of things you can make with this smoked pulled pork.

It is great on pulled pork sandwiches with coleslaw and brioche buns.

Make tacos or burritos. Rice bowls and even salads.

You can also serve this as a BBQ platter and add your favorite BBQ side dishes including pasta salad, potatoes and sweet rolls.
